Thinkspace is pleased to present new works by Kevin Peterson in Sovereign, the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. The Houston-based painter is known for his hyperrealistic works in which urban sprawls and rough city landscapes are offset by innocent subjects. Children and wild animals peacefully coexist as complicit companions in the detritus of stark urban environments. The poetic staging of these unexpected oppositions visually elicits powerful psychological themes. Recurring concepts continue to surface in Peterson’s work, like the perpetuity of change in self and environment, the navigation of personal trauma and loss, and solitude and the pursuit of companionship.
I will be unveiling six new pieces at the Thinkspace Gallery booth at the SCOPE Art Fair in Miami Beach this year. The fair runs from December 1st – 6th. Contact Thinkspace Gallery for purchase information and find more info on the fair here:
The Hunting Art Prize, which is sponsored by the international oil services company Hunting PLC, is a prestigious annual competition open to Texas artists who are 18 years of age or older. Its $50,000 award is historically the most generous annual award in North America for painting and drawing, and has helped to build the reputations, raise the profiles, and support the careers of distinguished artists.
The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and Juxtapoz magazine are pleased to present 20 Years Under the Influence of Juxtapoz, a group exhibition to commemorate two decades of the magazine’s influential contribution to contemporary art and culture. On view at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and curated by Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace Gallery and Gary Pressman of Copro Gallery, the exhibition features close to one hundred artists who have graced the publication’s pages and website, and showcases the diversity and breadth of the New Contemporary movement Juxtapoz has championed and helped to uphold.
The folks at Juxtapoz have curated a new generation of painters who have excelled at photorealism and hyperrealism, but have taken the mediums and injected them with new styles, techniques, ideas and individual personality. The resulting work is beyond categorization. With growing viewership interested in these super-realistic modes the field of artists creating high fidelity renderings is at a high water mark. The selection of works focuses on talent and technique in the figurative realm.
Kevin Peterson along with 7 other prominent figurative artists from around the country have been selected to take part in the group show “Get Real: New American Painting” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, Florida. Get Real’s heavily figurative focus explores themes that have persisted throughout the recent history of American realist painting such as narrative portraiture and social, psychological, and magical realism. 10 pieces of Peterson’s work will be on display. Inclusion in this museum exhibit marks a milestone in the career of Kevin Peterson.
